Zeeland Girls

Hell's Angels

Environmentalist Stamps from the NetherlandsThis vintage image of two girls in traditional Zeeland dress, inexplicably on motorcycles, is a modern reproduction by Art Unlimited and arrived today from Jet, taking only eight days from the city of Zwolle in the Netherlands.

The province of Zeeland is a collection of islands that were apparently difficult to reach until the early 20th century; I’m sure the photographer found humorous this juxtaposition of old and (what was then) new.

Send a Postcard to a Wedding

USA 2009 Wedding Stamp 59¢Ilona has an interesting project underway: she is asking folks to send postcards to her sister, Esmeralda, and her future brother-in-law, Frans, which she will collect and present to them on their wedding day on 29 May 2009.

A wedding card would be most appropriate, but Ilona will accept any sort of card.  You should address your congratulatory message directly to the happy couple, and send them to:

Esmeralda en Frans
(address redacted)

Depending on where you live, it is probably safe to send the cards as late as 15 May 2009 — but the sooner the better!  If you’re sending a postcard from the USA, the correct postage is 94¢. Feel free to link to this post on your own blog: http://www.wildpostcards.com/2009/04/send-a-postcard-to-a-wedding

Holland

If the shoe fits, take it sailing

Postcards ExchangeAmong the dozen items in my mailbox today (and thank you, senders, and please allow me some time to post your amazing items) was this card from the lovely Ineke, who writes: “On the card you’ll see the traditional dresses from Holland, but nobody wears them nowadays. The children are doing touwtje springen (rope jumping).” I like the Dutch language because, as a native English speaker, I can almost read it. My Babel fish says that “the cow jumped over the moon” translates to De koe die over de maan is gesprongen.

This card actually seems to be composed of two pieces: the matte black picture frame, if you will, with a photochrome print inside the embossed edge. Given that the card has no description, I suspect that the “frames” are sold with several different images.
