Texan Philosophies

Never slap a man who's chewin' tobacco

It seems to me that this top ten list of Texan philosophies doubles perfectly well as a list of New Year’s resolutions — except, perhaps, for #6, which I would say is more aphorism than resolution. Nevertheless, you’d be wise to follow these instructions, which come courtesy of Moriah at Tokyo Love Letters. Arigato gozaimasu and Happy New Year!

You Know You’re From Texas

...if you don't know the difference between "your" and "you're".

The Language Police managed to let this one get all the way to production with the phrase “you know your from Texas” uncorrected. Oh well, what can you do? As Christ said, if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out — but instead I think I’ll just let this one pass.

I can’t help but notice that these qualifications aren’t unique to Texans; I’ve met a number of people here in Georgia named Bubba. Some of them even hold public office.

University of Texas Tower

Mmm, orange popsicle

Sense Corp Texas 4000 for Cancer“This image is a photo of the UT Tower taken after the 2006 National Championship. It is the Central Administration Building of the University and on special occasions of academic achievement and athletic victories, the tower is lit up orange. Photo by Dr. Marvin L. Hackert.”

This postcard arrived yesterday from Kathryn in Austin, Texas, who says that she’s in her last year of university. Also, she says, “I love your website!” Now that’s the way to win me over. Finally, and most importantly, Kathryn is involved with The Sense Corp Texas 4000 for Cancer and plans to ride a bicycle from Austin all the way to Anchorage, Alaska next summer, to raise money in the fight against cancer. Click on the logo and see if you can help. If Kathryn can pedal 4,500 miles, surely there’s some small thing that you can do.

A Texan’s Map of the USA

A Gin-u-wine Texan's Map of the U.S.A. (No Bull)

Howdy from Texas (Tejas): This ain’t no bull. We ain’t never heard of Alasky. We’ve always been the biggest. Why, Brewster County in Texas is bigger than the whole state of Rhode Island. YA’LL COME (EVER CHANCE YE GIT).”

This unused postcard came to me from the collection of a young man called Wart, who travelled the country in 1981, mostly by bus.  He sent a lot of cards back home to his parents in Stone Mountain, Georgia, writing of his travels (mostly location updates), but he also seems to have hand-carried back a lot of unused ones, too.

You should definitely click on the map — uh, I mean postcard — and take a look at the Texas versions of the other state’s names.  Ohio, for example, is called “Oh-H-Ten” (O-H-IO).  That’s similar to a certain kind of problem we get occasionally in the computer field: there’s nothing wrong with the computer per se, but it has an I.D.-Ten-T issue.
